Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Monday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares closed Monday's session lower, weighed down by miners and oil stocks as crude dropped below $59 a barrel, while a lacklustre batch of corporate earnings offset a boost from take-over activity. Schneider Electric tumbled after saying it planned a capital increase to help fund the $6.1 billion acquisition of American Power Conversion, while Dutch bank ABN Amro slipped after its earnings disappointed.
"The little bit of disappointment we saw today and on Friday is not really a problem for the market, because this earnings season is good," said Philippe Gijsels, senior equity strategist at Fortis Bank.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6,258.19 points, down 4.35 or 0.07 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5,362.23 points, down 208 or 3.41 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8,652.36 points, down 43.02 or 0.49 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 30,244 points, up 27 or 0.09 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares rose 0.76 percent to a record closing peak as Cemex SA's US $12 billion bid for building products maker Rinker Group Ltd sparked a rally in construction stocks. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index added 40.9 points to 5,399.4. It touched an all-time high of 5,409.9 earlier in the day.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African stocks inched higher as a weaker rand buoyed petrochemicals firm Sasol and some mining stocks. The All-share index closed at 23,200 points, up 137.74 or 0.60 percent. The All Gold index closed at 2,865.65 points, up 58.83 or 2.10 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 15,600.92 points, up 109.66 or 0.71 percent.
HONG KONG STOCKS EXCHANGE: Hong Kong stock and currency markets were closed for a public holiday. Trading will resume on Tuesday. On Friday, the benchmark Hang Seng index closed at 18,297.55, down 56.19 points.
