The Anti-Terrorism Court in Karachi on Tuesday handed down death sentence to two activists of banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi having found them guilty in killing six persons and injuring seven others in Maripur area here in 2003.
Shahnawaz alias Shani and Mohammad Shaukat were prosecuted for attacking on the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Organisation (Suparco) bus with automatic weapons, carrying employees for Friday prayers on Hub River Road, Maripur area, Karachi, on October 3, 2003.
Six people were killed while seven people were injured in this attack. The court also sentenced them aggregate 52 years in prison for causing injuries to the seven persons besides imposing fine. "The prosecution has been able to successfully bring home the charges against both accused persons beyond any reasonable doubt," ATC Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti observed in his judgement.
The court observed that accused Mohammad Shaukat escorted co-accused Shahnawaz and absconding co-accused Asif alias Choto on motorcycle to the place of incident and facilitated them to commit the instant offence. He remained present there with the motorcycle in start position and when co-accused committed the offence he took them away and made their escape good from the scene of offence, court observed in its findings.
The prosecution placed 26 witnesses, including six eye witnesses to prove the guilt of the accused. Defendants counsels, M.R Syed and Aamir Mansoob Qureshi, said the trial court erred in appreciating the evidence and appeal will be filed in the high court against the trial court order.
