President Pervez Musharraf has called Jirga of Baloch tribal chieftains in Islamabad on November 8, what appears to be a riposte to the anti-Establishment pro-Akbar Bugti Baloch Sardars' meeting at Kalat in September.
All tribal chiefs from Balochistan except the sons of (late) Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, Sardar Ataullah Khan Mengal and Nawab Khuda Bukhsh Marri have been invited, a private channel quoting unidentified top officials said here on Tuesday.
The presidential invitation has come only a day after reports about unravelling of Bugti's Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), blamed on late Nawab's sons' bid to capture the party leadership, surfaced. JWP's seven senior-most office-bearers, including Senator Shahid Bugti and party's information secretary Amanullah Kanrani resigned from the party last week amidst rumours of intense tussle between three sons of Akbar Bugti and they have decided to quit the party.
Sources said that quite a few of the Baloch tribal Sardars, who attended the Grand Jirga at Kalat in September and had supported the call to take the Balochistan autonomy case to International Court of Justice, will be coming to attend the Jirga invited by President Musharraf.
The Jirga is expected to discuss current situation, operation against miscreants, and ongoing development projects in Balochistan, said officials. President Musharraf will hold consultations with the tribal chieftains and brief them on the measures being taken by the government to strengthen law and order situation, particularly since the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti.
