Three Asian men were sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for the racially motivated murder of a white Glasgow teenager. Kriss Donald died in March 2004 after he was snatched from a Glasgow street while walking with a friend. He was stripped half-naked, stabbed 13 times and set on fire.
Imran Shahid, 29, must serve at least 25 years in prison. His brother Zeeshan, 28, must serve 23 years, and Mohammed Faisal Mushtaq, 27, must serve 22 years. Donald's mother Angela described her son's killing as a "hellish murder".
"Justice has been done. It is over," she told reporters outside court, adding her thanks to the police and witnesses for their role in the case. The three men had denied the racially motivated abduction, assault and murder but were convicted at trial after fleeing to Pakistan and being extradited back to Britain.
Forensic scientist Anne Ramage told the jury she believed the 15-year-old was still alive when he was doused with petrol and set ablaze. A trail of burnt debris was found near the youngster's body, suggesting he had stumbled around, possibly in a futile attempt to extinguish the flames.
One man, Daanish Zahid, 22 is serving life for the murder after he was found guilty at an earlier trial, and another man, Zahid Mohammed has admitted a role in the abduction. He was jailed for 5 years. Strathclyde Assistant Chief Constable John Malcolm said the whole community had come together to help them track down those responsible.
"Everyone came together to support and inform our investigation, and through these actions, the community made it very clear that the sort of violent and horrific act that occurred is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," he said.
