The Lahore Police on Thursday arrested as many as 150 MMA workers and leaders including Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Liaquat Baloch, Amir-ul-Azeem, Farid Paracha, Qari Zawar and others on the charge of creating law and order situation.
The Jamaat chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, however, reached Gujranwala and addressed the MMA workers there. However, he was sent back to Islamabad from Gujrat. The police had cordoned off the Jamaat-e-Islami headquarters on Wednesday night in order to pre-empt MMA's Lahore-Gujrat caravan as MMA had announced to hold Lahore to Gujrat march to press Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to quit his office.
Policemen were deployed outside Mansoora. All roads leading to Mansoora were closed with barriers and barbed wires on Thursday morning. Heavy police contingents were also deployed outside Punjab University, Science College and other colleges of the city.
The MMA workers also held clashes with police at Mansoora, Chauburji, Punjab University and others places in the city. The police also baton charged the MMA workers and used tear gas to disburse them. The police arrested about 150 MMA workers and detained them in different police stations.
According to police spokesman, section 144 was imposed in Punjab and heavy contingents of police were deployed to maintain law and order in the province. Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Syed Munawar Hussain while addressing a press conference said that Maulana Taqi of Islamic Council had declared women protection bill against the Islamic injunctions, hence Chaudhry Shujaat should resign.
