President General Pervez Musharraf has expressed his realisation that there are hundreds of thousands of local patients suffering from organ failure, and added such patients, who had exhausted all avenues of medical treatment, could live normally from the beneficence of organ transplantation.
In his message read out on Thursday evening at a ceremony held at Sindh Governor House to honour "Organ donors," the President congratulated the 1,800 donors who gave their kidneys and part of their liver to save the lives of their near and dear ones. "They must be congratulated for their great act of sacrifice," the President said.
He, on behalf of the nation, also lauded the families of the deceased donors Syed Naveed Anwar and Shamim Bano, who were kept on life support machine for many days before being declared brain dead. Acknowledging that these young Pakistanis had wished during their lifetime to donate parts of their body after their death to save human beings, President Pervez Musharraf said it was indeed creditable that the families on their own approached hospitals for organ donation.
After the families' consent, the transplants were carried out at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) and kidneys were transplanted to four very deserving patients on lifetime dialysis, who were now living a happy life, President Musharraf said.
President of Pakistan also congratulated SIUT team who had carried out nearly 2,000 live related donor transplants in the last 20 years; all 'Free with Dignity'.
These acts of generosity have been one of the finest examples of dedication, which the others in the country could emulate, he said.
