The Punjab Government informed the Supreme Court on Monday that it has doubled the food budget of jail inmates from Rs 200 million to 400 million. The court had taken suo motu notice on a report about the plight of prisoners in jails.
Inspector General Prisons Punjab Sarfraz Mufti submitted that the Punjab government has increased prisoners' daily food allowance from Rs 0.50 to Rs 2.00 besides constructing women's wings in the jails.
The court disposed of the notice with direction that the government should try to provide better facilities to the prisoners, and subject to availability of funds, also improve medical treatment in the jail hospitals.
