Chairman World Punjabi Congress (WPC) Fakhar Zaman has said that the government was wrongly painting 'Sufism' by holding conferences and seminars under the auspices of National Sufi Council (NSC).
Addressing a press conference, here on Wednesday, Fakhar said World Punjabi Congress was of the firm view that the government after being misguided by elements having vested interests and some bureaucrats, was trying to mislead people through wrong interpretation of Sufism. He said 'Sarkari Sufism' was total negation of the lesson of culture of tolerance, self-negation, resistance against despotism and fascist system of governess.
He regretted that millions of rupees were being spent on such gatherings, which become a platform of fashion show of elites of our society. He said World Punjabi Congress (WPC) feels that neither the central government nor the Punjab government were sincere in promoting the atmosphere of mutual love between various provinces and ethnic groups.
He said that World Punjabi Congress takes the credit for playing paramount role in promoting friendship and amity between Pakistan and India. He added that all declarations of these conferences laid emphasis on the need of disseminating message of Sufism for bringing peace and fraternity. WPC would hold conferences and seminars on international, national and provincial level in Pakistan and India in 2007, he informed.
Delegations of scholars who have solid work in Sufi tradition will be sent to the countries like Turkey, Iran, Russia and Central Asia to attend moots on Sufi writings and teachings, he said, adding WPC will publish books on Sufism written in different languages giving the correct philosophy of Sufism.
