A number of new projects worth Rs 1.263 billion are underway to upgrade educational facilities at the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan.
Sources at the BZU told newsmen that the federal government had committed a sum of Rs 706.996 million, the provincial government would allocate Rs 556.643 million, while the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had approved Rs 133.760 million for projects in the second uplift phase.
The funds will be utilised to enhance facilities at various departments including Computer Science, Sociology, Psychology, Commerce, Islamic Studies and Mass Communication, as well as the construction of a hostel, which is almost complete now. The University College of Agriculture has been allocated funds amounting Rs 98.884 million and 59 percent work on the project has been completed.
Likewise, 77 percent work on the expansion project at the university college of engineering and technology which will cost Rs 99.974 million has also been completed.
Sources said that the HEC had sanctioned funds to the tune of Rs 173.744 million for the Institute of Advanced Material Sciences and 66 percent work was completed. Work on the Rs 38 million Bio Technology Institute is underway and the project is nearing completion.
A sum of Rs 38.585 million has been spent on the four-year undergraduate BS programme to make it an international standard institute. The department of Mass Communication is being upgraded with the establishment of a mini TV station and an FM radio station to enhance practical skills of the students.
The department of Seraiki, the language of South Punjab, has been set up at a cost of Rs 36.484 million, which aims to promote the literature and culture of this region. A hostel of international stature was being built for foreign faculty members, which will cost the exchequer Rs 14.729 million, sources added.
A sub-campus of the BZU has been established at a cost of Rs 38.828 million at Dera Ghazi Khan to provide higher education facilities to the youth of this hitherto backward area, at their doorsteps.
