The government of the religio-political alliance MMA in NWFP on Wednesday outrightly rejected the promotion of secularism in garb of the inclusion of a chapter on enlightened moderation in the textbooks of the students.
Briefing the newsmen here at the media centre of the Directorate of Information, the Provincial Minister for Education and Literacy, Maulana Fazle Ali Haqqani said that the 11th inter-provincial education ministers meeting held in federal capital, Islamabad on Monday has allowed NWFP and Balochistan to include 80 Quranic verses in the Islamiat textbook for secondary classes.
The provincial government, he said had received a draft of new curricula with only 20 verses of Holy Quran and only Urdu translation of Hadiths sans Arabic version. He said that the province on receiving the new amended scheme of study and curricula had expressed its apprehensions over the matter.
He said that sans Hadith, Islam is incomplete and claimed that the education ministry on the demands and proposals of NWFP and Balochistan included 80 Quranic verses and translation of Hadiths along with Arabic version.
Maulana Haqqani said that the provincial government on receiving of the proposed changes in the curricula arranged a three-day workshop and invited education experts to prepare recommendations in that regard. He said that after thorough deliberations the participants of the workshop prepared recommendations saying that 90 percent of them regarding science subjects were already been accepted and included in the curricula.
The NWFP education minister said that the provincial government has expressed protest with the ministry of education over the deletion of chapters regarding Seerat (Life of Holy Prophet) and four Caliphs from the textbooks of Urdu. He said that Seerat and quotations of the companions of Holy Prophet are must for the character building of our youngsters.
The provincial minister said that the inter-provincial education ministers meeting had made the passage of the papers of Pakistan Studies and Islamiat compulsory for dual citizenship holder students seeking admission in professional colleges of the country.
He said that the meeting adopted a unified policy for students seeking improvement in secondary and intermediate level examinations. However, those failed in two subjects would have to avail chance of appearance in supplementary examination, while those failed in three subjects would be considered completely failed.
The provincial minister said that from next the secondary school certificate (SSC) examination would begin in first week of May adding that the InterBoard Committee (IBC) had been directed to ensure the holding of the examination at a time in all parts of the country. All provinces have agreed to hold education census on October 16, every year.
