Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that Pakistan was tapping all sources including hydel, nuclear and solar to meet its growing energy demands. Aziz said this while talking to Director General International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Dr Mohamed M ElBaradei who called on him on the sidelines of annual meeting of World Economic Forum.
The Prime Minister told Dr ElBaradei that Pakistan's energy demand is increasing by 8 to 10 percent annually due to healthy economic growth that is leading to high trade volumes and attracting investment. "Pakistan targets meeting its energy demand of 8 percent by 2025 from nuclear source."
Shaukat Aziz told the DG IAEA that Pakistan's nuclear programme was in safe hands and is controlled by a strong and independent Command and Control Authority. He said Pakistan is a responsible nuclear country and has strategic nuclear doctrine based on minimum credible deterrence to ensure peace and security in the region.
"Pakistan's nuclear programme is only to ensure balance of power in the region," Prime Minister Aziz maintained, adding Pakistan is using its nuclear resource to produce electricity under the safeguards of IAEA.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said there should be equal treatment with all the countries on nuclear issue, and every one should be treated at par.
