Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that in accordance with the vision of President General Pervez Musharraf, a big programme is being given a practical shape for the large scale development of major cities of the province including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala at a cost of Rs 43 billion during next three years.
He was presiding over a meeting to review the pace of implementation of various projects under a development package of five major cities, here on Monday, disclosed an official.
Punjab chief secretary Salman Siddique, P&D chairman Suleman Ghani, secretary finance Sohail Ahmad, director Urban Unit Dr Javed Tahir, district nazim Multan Faisal Mukhtar, district nazim Faisalabad Zahid Tauseef, district nazim Rawalpindi Raja Javed Ikhlas, district nazim Gujranwala Fayyaz Chattha, Naib district nazim Lahore Idrees Hanif and DCOs of concerned districts were also present on this occasion.
The CM said that a strategy has been evolved to complete infrastructure development, sewerage and sanitation, water supply, solid waste management, transportation and other projects in social development in five major cities of the province. He said that cities have basic importance in social development, therefore, additional resources are being provided for the completion of quality infrastructure and health and sanitation projects.
According to him, concerned MNAs, MPAs and Nazims would supervise the projects of "Chief Minister's Package" in order to provide basic facilities to the citizens at their doorsteps in these cities. Moreover, the Ring Road, roads, sewerage, water supply and sanitation and other projects would be implemented in Multan at a cost of Rs 11.75 billion.
The Chief Minister directed to evolve a comprehensive plan for the conservation and rehabilitation of national heritage along with implementation of these projects in Multan so that repair and renovation of historical buildings could be ensured. He said that this project would result in highlighting historical and cultural identity of Multan.
He also directed that immediate measures should be taken for the stoppage of sewerage-water being released in canal at Lahore. He emphasised the need to review the affairs of Wasa and said that replacement of sewerage and provision of potable water would help check various diseases in the city. He said that Rs 11 billion would be spent on the projects of sewerage, water supply, pump stations and construction of roads in Lahore.
The meeting was informed that Ring Road would be constructed in Faisalabad at a cost of Rs 11 billion besides Rs 7.5 billion would be spent on Millat Road, Nishatabad Bridge, sewerage, water supply and other projects. The projects of Ring Road, Chakri and Adiala Road, water supply and tubewell installation would be implemented at a cost of Rs 6 billion at Rawalpindi.
The CM directed that sewerage replacement and new water supply facilities should immediately be provided in Gujranwala so that the people could lead a pollution and disease free life. "Construction of roads, sewerage and provision of water supply would be ensured in Nundipur, Aroop Town, Khial Shahpur Town and Qila Didar Singh Town at a cost of Rs 7 billion in Gujranwala so that gastro-enteritis and other diseases could be overcome with cleanliness arrangements in the city.
