Provincial Police Officer Balochistan Tariq Masood Khosa has announced a crackdown against the Afghan nationals illegally staying in Balochistan including Quetta. Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, he said the process of registration of Afghan nationals has been completed and now none will be allowed to live illegally in Balochistan.
"Out of total 0.8 million Afghan refugees in Balochistan 0.6 million have got themselves registered while the remaining avoided", he said, adding that 0.3 million of 0.4 million Afghan refugees living in Quetta got registered themselves.
The PPO said they arrested 12 Afghan nationals during February from Quetta and cases have been registered against them under Foreigners Act. They would soon be deported to their homeland, he maintained.
As many as 18,000 Afghan nationals got themselves enrolled in Jungle Pir Alizai Afghan refugee camp in Killa Abdullah which is being closed on June 30, he informed. Referring to terrorism and attacks on national installations in Balochistan during the month of February, he said a total of 31 such incidents including the city court suicidal attack on February 17 took place in which 16 persons were killed and 41 injured. He, however, termed this figure as 15 percent lesser than that of the terrorism incidents committed in February 2006 which stood to 49.
He expressed satisfaction over the law and order in the province and said it is also evident from the famous Sibi Mela which continued for five days from February 25 to March 1 without occurrence of even a minor incident.
About the progress in city court suicidal attack, the PPO said the sketch of the attacker as drawn with the descriptions of the eye-witnesses suggests that he might be an Uzbek. The actual identification of the accused is yet to be confirmed, he added.
The hand grenade and the explosives recovered from the jacket of the suicide bomber are the same which were used in the terrorism acts in Islamabad Marriot Hotel, Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan, he said, and added that they are trying to make joint efforts to trace the gang.
Referring to police performance during the last month, the PPO said Loralai Police successfully recovered the 14-year old boy, Abdul Habib Nasir, without payment of ransom after 27 days. "Four accused have been identified and efforts are underway to arrest them", he added.
