District Officer (DO), Agriculture, Arshad Javed, has urged review of local level agri-policies to ensure great attention to the forex earning cotton crop in the district, known for producing optimum amount of the silver fibre over the last six years.
Talking to newsmen on Saturday, Arshad Javed said so far 1,334,242 bales of cotton had been produced in the area, which were seven percent less as compared to last year's output during the corresponding period. However, he said till March 31, about 14,25,000 bales would be produced.
He said last year sugarcane was grown on a record area of 195,500 acres, adding that local growers were more inclined towards cane with the setting up of cane crushing mills.
He said cotton was also affected by various diseases, associated with the sugarcane crop, adding that this year the cane sowing was expected on more than 200,000 acres of land. The DO said practice and trend needed a balancing act to maintain the yield of clean cotton in the district.
