'Oracle' is focusing on the telecommunication sector in Asia-Pacific under its programme of South Asian Growth Economies (SAGE), said Senior Industry Director, Oracle Communications, media & utilities Industry Business Unit (IBU) Mohan Veloo.
In an interview with Business Recorder, Mohan said his team was responsible for driving the Global Communications, Media and Utilities strategies and initiatives. His team also develops Oracle applications and technology solution architectures for Oracle's Communication customers in the region.
On Oracle's interest and evaluation in Pakistan's telecommunications industry, he said that Pakistan "is the Oracle's largest market" in the SAGE-region in terms of customers, partners, revenue and employees. "Oracle is committed to Pakistan market through its extensive network of more than 50 channels and alliance partners including Jaffer Brothers Ltd, A F Fergusons & Company, Sidat Hyder Morshed Associates (Pvt) Ltd, Netsol Pakistan, etc."
He added that Pakistan serves as a Regional Office for Oracle to manage Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and is looked after by Regional Director SAGE West Samina Rizwan.
He said that Oracle started its operations in Pakistan in 1989 and its applications commenced about 12 years ago. At present, Oracle besides data-base management system, has focused on its applications side, which are being extensively used in all sectors. He added that his visit early this week was mainly dedicated to the telecommunication sector that is fast emerging in the developing countries.
He said that Mobilink, Paktel, Ufone, Telenor, Warid Telecom, PTCL, besides Financial Services and others, were its major clients. He said Oracle improves the security, efficiency, and responsiveness of all levels of government.
Oracle's next generation enterprise applications, built on a service-oriented architecture, will enable better business insight, adaptive business processes, and a superior ownership experience and it provides all the key components-database, middleware, and applications, all based on open standards-to transform an organisation.
He said that Oracle had a proven track record for delivering business value in the Communications industry. "Only Oracle offers end-to-end support for the key business processes for telecoms, from service creation, offer management and order orchestration, through provisioning and service delivery, to billing, revenue assurance, and reporting. Now with the combined strengths of Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Siebel, Portal Software and MetaSolv, Oracle offers the widest choice of enterprise software applications for Business Support Systems and Operational Support Systems (BSS/OSS)."
About IT sector in Pakistan, he was very optimistic and said that the exponential growth in Pakistan was quite high. "There are about 1.2 million subscribers per month."
Regarding any service to the community, he said: "We are not doing anything in real terms, but have initiated a programme with the name of 'think.com'.
This programme is meant to educate the primary and secondary school children, to familiarise them with Oracle systems before they reach higher education levels. This programme has been initially taken up in 17 schools of Karachi and is helping about 700 students. Other than that, we also assist IT students with internship programmes facility."
