Three students of Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar have carried out scientific research on different aspects of Hindko language, paving the way for more work.
Gandhara Hindko Board, a literary, cultural and social welfare organisation, arranged a function at the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) to unveil and acknowledge the work done by three students of the Computer Science Department - Saima Jabeen, Mudassar Niaz and Bilal Khan.
The research is a requirement for Master's of Computer Science degree.
Professor Aysha Sameen of the Computer Science Department presided over the event while an eminent cardiologist and Vice-Chairman of Gandhara Hindko Board Assistant Professor Dr Adnan Gul was the chief guest at the function, attended by a large number of students and teachers of the department apart from Hindko literary.
Saima Jabeen used the multimedia to inform the audience about his 130-page scientific research titled "Computational Morphology of Hindko language".
Mudassar Niaz and Bilal Khan dwelt at length on their joint 140-page work "Hindko Phonology".
The students explained to participants different chapters of their work that was supervised by Department Chairman Professor Dr Mohammad Abid Khan.
The young researchers extended special thanks to Professor Dr Elahi Bakhsh Awan, a linguist and research scholar of Hindko from Peshawar with a doctoral degree in Linguistics (Hindko Verbal Phrase) from University of London, United Kingdom, and Professor Dr Sabir Kalorvi, another Hindko language researcher from Haripur and Chairman of Urdu Department, University of Peshawar and Mohammad Ziauddin, General Secretary of Gandahara Hindko Board, Peshawar for guiding them throughout the research.
Saima said that she had developed a Hindko analyser software that would give the category of the word such as noun, pronoun, verb & adjective after placing an entry in the computer. Entry of an entire sentence will give the category of the constituents, she elaborated.
Mudassar Niaz and Bilal Khan said the research conducted by them on Hindko Phonology could serve as a base for more work on other aspects of the language.
The students said that they intended to launch Hindko Text to Speech and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) projects in future to carry forward their already-done work.
They said they would develop a Hindko speech recognition software using the process of speech input, numerical representation, phonetic mapping and grammar mapping and output.
Presiding over the program, Professor Aysha Sameen was all-praise for the students for conducting the Hindko research. "This type of work has been done in the history of the Computer Science Department for the first time. The topics were difficult, but the three students opted for that willingly for the love their mother language. The students have accomplished the task in a befitting manner," said the professor who was also thankful to Gandhara Hindko Board for facilitating the students by providing them information material and guidance.
Speaking as chief guest, Assistant Professor Dr Adnan Gul said that Hindko was an ancient and well-spoken language of the country, but had not received the required attention in the higher seats of learning in the past.
The language and culture activist termed the work on computational Hindko Morphology and Hindko Phonology as a milestone and hoped it would motivate others for research.
He said Gandhara Hindko Board would continue helping the researchers on Hindko language and culture. Earlier, the function started with the introductory remarks by Dr Salahuddin.
Gandhara Hindko Board General Secretary Mohammad Ziauddin talked about the objectives, activities and future programs of the board. He said the work on the versified translation of the Holy Quran had been completed and first comprehensive Hindko dictionary finalised by Professor Dr Elahi Bakhsh Awan.
The publication of the Holy Quran and the Hindko dictionary were the top the priority of the board, he added.
