The combined opposition on Monday submitted two adjournment motions with the Senate Secretariat, seeking debate on police attack on a private television channel, newspaper offices and merciless use of force against protesting legal fraternity in the federal capital.
The opposition has moved these motions under Rule-74 of the 'Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate 1988'. In their first motion, the opposition legislators noted that the police attacked the offices of the Geo television and The News on last Friday and smashed glass windowpanes, fired teargas shells and pelted stones on the staff.
The incident took place right under the nose of the federal government, which has caused grave concerns among the general public and needed to be discussed in the House, they observed.
The other motion is related to manhandling of peaceful procession of lawyers when non-functional Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry came to appear before the Supreme Judicial Council. The adjournment motion said that Islamabad police manhandled and used force against the peaceful procession of lawyers on March 16.
The police mercilessly baton charged legal fraternity and teargas shells were fired on lawyers who had assembled in front of the Supreme Court building, resulting in injuries to several lawyers and their supporters.
Besides, the opposition leader in the Upper House of the Parliament Mian Raza Rabbani, Prof Khurshid Ahmed (MMA), Asfandyar Wali (ANP), Latif Khan Khosa (PML-N) and PPP-P lawmakers Enver Baig, Safdar Abbasi, Saadia Abbasi, Babar Awan and Rukhsana Zuberi have signed the two motions.
