The federal government has approved Rs 294.61 million for three projects in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mithi districts to ensure sustainable supply of irrigation water to remote areas. According to official documents, the first project, which will cost Rs 185.098 million is for the strengthening of banks of Mitharao Canal at Taluka Samaro district Umerkot.
The Mithrao Canal off-takes from Nara Canal U/S of Maki Regulator (RD 150) and its design discharge is 2,378 cusecs and it is 83.7 miles long. The tail regulator of Mithrao Canal is at (RD 418.50) from where 21.3 miles long Naukot Branch off takes.
Channel Run Distry off-takes from 21 mile of Naukot Branch. Channel Dhoro and Diplo minor off-takes from Run Distry supplying water for irrigation as well as for drinking in the remote areas of Umerkot district.
The present condition of the banks is unsatisfactory to pass the required discharge up to the tail of canals. The existing modules are in very deplorable condition. Those modules require major repair and the project approved by CDWP will help improve the situation.
Another project is designed to reduce water losses to increase irrigation intensity through concrete lining of Sehri Minor, Dhoro Minor and Diplo Minor in district Tharparkar Sindh at a cost of Rs 59.333 million. Naukot Branch System off-taking form tail of Mithrao Canal is deficient one and passes through sandy area and ends in the Dipole Taluka of Thar.
