The lining of watercourses under National Programme for Improvement of watercourses gained full momentum in Sindh as 375 more watercourses have been completed during February 17 to March 17, 2007 in various districts of Sindh.
According to official statistics, up to February 17, 2007, a total of 1,375 watercourses were completed and 2,509 were on near-completion against the target of 6,095 watercourses. The launching of National Programme for Improvement of Watercourses (NPIW) is one of the bold the initiatives of President General Pervez Musharraf. The objective was to avert the wastage of water, preserve and utilise maximum quantity for irrigation.
Under this mega project, the government had decided to line 33,000 watercourses in all 23 districts of Sindh with an amount of Rs 22 billion. The government had allocated Rs 6 billion in the financial year 2006-2007 and up to March 17, 2007, over Rs 4 billion has so far been spent.
Upto March 17, 2007, the statistics revealed that Programme Monitoring Unit of NPIW Sindh has so far lined 1,750 watercourses in all 23 districts of the province while 3,065 more watercourses are near completion against the target of 6,095 watercourses to be completed during 2006-2007.
The district wise performance of the programme showed that out of 280 targeted watercourses in Dadu district, the lining of 114 have been completed while 162 more watercourses are under completion. In Hyderabad district, out of 70 targeted watercourses, 23 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 21 watercourses.
In Jamshoro district, out of 175 targeted watercourses, 61 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 76 watercourses. In Matiari district, out of 105 targeted watercourses, only 10 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 28 watercourses.
In Tando Allahyar district, out of 70 targeted watercourses, 21 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 24 watercourses. In Tando Muhammad Khan district, out of 360 targeted watercourses, 138 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 141 watercourses.
In Thatta district, out of 650 targeted watercourses, 88 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 444 watercourses. In Karachi, out of 300 targeted watercourses, 132 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 49 watercourses.
In Jacobabad district, out of 125 targeted watercourses, 44 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 142 watercourses. In Kambar-Shahdadkot district, out of 300 targeted watercourses, 49 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 155 watercourses.
In Kashmore-Kandhkot district, out of 175 targeted watercourses, 49 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 98 watercourses. In Larkana district, out of 225 targeted watercourses, 50 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 91 watercourses.
In Badin district, out of 600 targeted watercourses, 160 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 270 watercourses. In Mirpurkhas district, out of 200 targeted watercourses, 73 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 72 watercourses.
In Sanghar district, out of 210 targeted watercourses, 58 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 95 watercourses. In Tharparkar district, out of 180 targeted watercourses, 70 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 28 watercourses.
In Umerkot district, out of 180 targeted watercourses, 46 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 69 watercourses. In Ghotki district, out of 455 targeted watercourses, 93 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 213 watercourses.
In Khairpur district, out of 630 targeted watercourses, 191 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 516 watercourses. In Nawabshah district, out of 120 targeted watercourses, 39 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 37 watercourses.
In Naushero Feroz district, out of 105 targeted watercourses, 35 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 49 watercourses. In Shikarpur district, out of 300 targeted watercourses, 136 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 155 watercourses. In Sukkur district, out of 280 targeted watercourses, 70 have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 130 watercourses.
