At the 89th Academy Awards, 'La La Land' was announced as 'Best Picture' winner until the acceptance speech was interrupted to announce that 'Moonlight' has actually won. The whole cast and the crew of 'La La Land' was on stage when producer Jordan Horowitz declared that the real winner is 'Moonlight'.
Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty took the stage to announce best picture and Beatty looked at the card and paused. He handed it to Dunaway, and she read the card, 'La La Land'. Later, Beatty returned to the mic and said, "I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelop and it said, 'Emma Stone, La La Land'. That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny".
He had accidentally been given the 'Best Actress' envelope, which Stone won earlier in the evening.
Though, Moonlight makers accepted the award but it was one of the most awkward moments of the evening. Director Barry Jenkins said, "Even in my dreams, this could not be true. But to hell with dreams, I'm done with it because this is true". He even praised La La Land who won 14 nominations for the 89th Academy Awards and has won several of them.
