City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has handed over 120 out of total 165 vehicles and machinery of Rs 743.045 million to the Municipal Service Department (MSD) and vowed to bring the metropolis in the index of the most neat and clean cities of the world.
Addressing the machinery and vehicles handing over ceremony was held at the Polo Ground (Jinnah Ground) on Monday, he said 120 vehicles were being given away to the Municipal Department, while 45 such vehicles and machinery would soon be made available to it. Of given vehicles and machinery to department, including 21 Sludge Carrier Dumpers, 20 Arms Roll, 20 Refuse Van with the capacity of 5 tons, 20 Dump Trucks with the capacity of 5 tons, 10 wheel-loaders, 5 Excavators and 4 Grab Cranes.
On the occasion, DCO Karachi, Fazalur Rehman, EDO Municipal Services, Masood Alam, Town Nazims, Councillors and CDGK officials were present.
Kamal apprised that by taking the additional responsibilities, CDGK had created a separate municipal department, and a post of 20 grade officer to run it with a view to ease out the town and union nazims during their garbage removal operations to tidy up the city more efficiently.
Regarding the Sludge Carrier, City Nazim pointed out that they would be used to absorb the liquid waste directly from the sides of the drains and could be carried out to landfill sides.
He said CDGK had initiated several healthcare and recreational projects since taking over the office, adding that similarly, further steps being taken to ensure the healthcare and cleanliness in the city.
Unfolding the list of 38 major roads having been divided into 19 major corridors in the first phase, which will be cleaned, he termed them the most important roads linking Karachi's various parts to one another.
In line with the first phase cleanliness programme, CDGK's Municipal Services Department will carry out operations. They are included: from Sohrab Goth to Tower, Shahrae Faisal from Metropole Hotel to Quaidabad, from Jail roundabout to Hino roundabout, Shahrae Faisal from Karsaz bridge to Habib Bank, from Drig Road roundabout bridge to Nagan, from Gurumandir to Surjani.
Similarly, from Kanda Wala building M A Jinnah Road to Manghopir, Sharae Orangi and Sharae Qadafi, from ICI Bridge to Hawks Bay T-Junction, from Site road to Hub river road and Mawach Goth, from Mauripur to zoological garden (Mirza Adam Khan road) will be cleaned.
Moreover, CDGK will also execute its cleanliness operations from Abul Isphani road to superhighway, Shabbir Usmani road from Bhayani heights to Hassan Square, from New Town police station to Rashid Minhas Road, Pir Sibghatullah Rashdi road.
Cleanliness programme includes roads from Teen Hati to Lea Market, Hino roundabout to Quaidabad via 8000 road, from Mehran Highway to Landhi via Cattle Colony, from Mereweather Tower to Quaidabad roundabout 12000 road, and from Mereweather Tower to Clifton fly-over via Aiwan-e-Saddar.
Kamal asserted that Karachi would witness a positive change regarding the cleanliness within next 15 days. He hoped that Karachi would soon retrieve its lost status of being the beautiful neat and clean amongst the Asian cities. He appealed to the citizens for their help in making the cleanliness programme successful.
