The Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar on Monday announced winners from Pakistan in the first phase of the international design competition. Anum Baig from Bay View High School was declared first, Asra Abdul Samad from Karachi Grammar School second and Khadija Safri from the Foundation School third.
Moamer Qazafi, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, VCUQ, on the occasion said that the judging took place at VCUQ on February 11, 2007 and judged by a world-class jury consisting of representatives from the Qatri Ministry of Education, representatives from Sasol Chevron and Arts Faculty from VCUQ.
Other VCUQ officials, who supervised the judgement process were VCUQ Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr Charles Bleick, Events Project Co-ordinator Ms Donna Duffett and Recruitment Officer Dima Salameh.
He said that 116 students participated from Qatar, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Turkey and for the first time from Pakistan. He said three semi-finalists were chosen from each country and would receive cash prizes of $1,400 for the first place, $800 for second and $600 for the third place.
All the three winners from each country would now move on the second phase of the competition in which two, full four-year scholarships to attend VCUQ would be awarded to two finalists. The scholarships for creativity to attend VCUQ are provided by Sheikh Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the chairperson of the Qatar Foundation.
