Four Indonesian states owned sugar mills plan to hold auctions to buy 173,514 tonnes of raw sugar on April 18, officials said on Thursday. The mills will process the raw sugar to optimise their production capacity due to an expected fall in the cane harvest this year. The country's sugar mills initially planned to import up to 225,000 tonnes of raw sugar.
"State trading and manufacturing firm PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia, PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) IX, PTPN X and PTPN XI will hold auctions in Surabaya to buy raw sugar," Arguing Mordant, RNI's deputy director, told Reuters.
In the auctions, RNI will buy 43,975 tonnes and PTPN IX will buy 19,539 tonnes of raw sugar. PTPN X will buy 50,000 tonnes while PTPN XI will buy 60,000 tonnes of raw sugar.
There were no details when the raw sugar would enter the country but it should arrive at the start of cane crushing season in May, said Dinah Maulida, director general of foreign trade at the Trade Ministry.
