City lawyers boycotted the court proceedings throughout Southern Punjab on Friday, the day of hearing of the "non-functional" CJP by the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), at the call of Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association.
Lawyers also organised a rally led by the local office-bearers, which culminated at Ghanta Ghar Chowk. Heavy contingent of police was deployed around the district courts. Multan High Court Bar Association General Secretary Rana Naveed Akhtar said they would raise their voice against the injustice done to the judiciary and vowed that they would not sit idle till their demands were met.
Pakistan People's Party also staged a demonstration led by Begum Nasim Chaudhry, MNA, Dr Javed Siddiqui, MPA, Khalid Hanif Lodhi, Tehrik-i-Insaf's Shaikh Nadeem Ghaffar and others.
People's Seraiki Party, Mutahidda Majlis-i-Amal, PML-N, Tehrik-i-Insaf and other political parties organised their rallies. MMA also expressed its solidarity with the lawyers and sat with them in hunger striking camp.
A mock 'Justice' (Insaf) was burnt in Mian Chunnu, Khanewal district to express their anger against the injustice. Apart from this, the lawyers of Bahawalpur, Rahimyar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Vehari, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur organised rallies. Reports reached here said that the police had arrested more than 45 activists of PPP, PML-N and MMA from different parts of Multan district.
