The Constitution of Pakistan does not allow President General Pervez Musharraf to contest presidential election or get himself re-elected by the incumbent assemblies, said PPP Central Secretary Finance Senator Dr Babar Awan here on Sunday.
He said Supreme Court would soon be invoked to foil attempts of President Musharraf to get himself re-elected by the incumbent assemblies.
Talking about the presidential reference against non-functional chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Dr Awan said the presidential reference was filed as a pre-emptive measure just to ensure prolonging of the rule. Responding a query regarding Jamia Hafsa issue, he claimed that government has empowered the religious powers to harass the West.
Dr Awan said government has lost its power to meet the challenges of terrorism. He said unabated incidents of terrorism across the country have badly affected the entire civil society and now people feel insecure.
He said unwise and wrong policies of the government have created a sense of deprivation among the masses, and now people feel as if they are being pushed to a cul-de-sac.
He said a true democracy could only pulled the country out of crisis. PPP was the only political party, which had never struck any deal with the dictatorship, he added.
