National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has been serving the national interests by accumulating and dispersing valuable computerised data to government departments. General Manager Nadra Brigadier Aleem M Ahmed (Retd) told the participants of an International Conference on "Governing for MDGs" here on Sunday.
The concluding session with the topic "Information System Reform for Improving Governance" was presided over by Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau Daniyal Aziz.
GM Nadra said that CNIC project was a success as more than 86 million citizens including 30 million children were registered in the database. More than 56 million ID cards were issued to citizens over the age of 18 years, he added.
About Nadra information system he said, it is probably the largest fully integrated database in the world that is having both and Automatic Finger Identification System (AFIS) and a Facial Recognition System.
Aleem M Ahmed said Nadra was ranked among the top 50 technology companies of the world for two consecutive years (2005-06). He said Nadra is hectically involved in serving the national needs like working on Punjab Civil Services Census Project, Civil Registration Management System, Child Support Programme, besides setting up of 480 computer touch screen kiosks to facilitate utility bills payment, cell phone scratch cards and CNIC verification.
Focal Advisor to NRB Adnan Shah apprised the participants about National Reconstruction Information Management System (NARIMS). He said NARIMS is a decision support system designed and developed to provide support to the local governments with prompt access to detailed and reliable information.
President Computer Society of Pakistan Tahir Chaudhry and Chief Executive Officer, AOS Ali Arshad Hakeem also expressed their views. Former Chairman NRB General Tanvir Naqvi (Retd) in his concluding speech said reduction of poverty poses a serious challenge for the whole world community.
He said governance system should be made to encourage good ones and discourage the wrong doers.
He expressed the hope that delusions created by few elements about LG system would be erased and system would have to stay and thrive. However, implementation and modification processes should go ahead, he added.
At the end of the conference chairman NRB Daniyal Aziz read out recommendations.
These include the treatment of revenue, police, judiciary and audit accounts as special transaction cost sector, strengthening of new institutions under the LG system, bringing of current programmes in line with MDGs, usage of conditional grants for specific problem and the financing of LG funds through PFC, etc.
