Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, currently visiting Iran, met his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Rehmati here on Monday and discussed matters of mutual interest and promotion of bilateral co-operation between the two countries in railways.
According to a fax message, welcoming Sheikh Rashid, the Iranian Minister for Road and Transportation referred to deep-rooted historical, cultural and religious ties between the two countries. He said Pakistan and Iran enjoyed close brotherly relations and had many commonalities, and underscored the need of expansion of trade and economic co-operation between the two countries.
He said the recent high-level visits between the two countries reflected the political desire of the leadership of the both countries to further strengthen their existing bilateral relations in various fields.
The Iranian Minister said Iran was keen to enhance co-operation with Pakistan in railways. The promotion of relations in this field could provide solid basis for expansion of co-operation in other areas between the two countries, he added.
The Iranian Minister said that Iranian side attached great importance to the visit of Minister for Railways. He expressed the hope that rehabilitation of the railway links between Pakistan and Iran would lead to the boosting of trade relations between the two countries. Sheikh Rashid said that Pakistan and Iran enjoyed close brotherly relations and desired to further strengthen those ties through rail links.
He said that railway was the fast link between Pakistan and Iran and the rehabilitation of Zahidan-Taftan road links would not only facilitate Zaireen to Iran, but also expand business activities between the two countries. He said Pakistan and Iran could play important role in strengthening trade and economic relations with ECO countries.
He said there was a vast scope of joint venture between Pakistan and Iran in the field of railway. He said the railway organisations of both the countries could share expertise and know-how to boost their co-operation in this field.
The Federal Minister for Railways also visited locomotive factory and diesel engine factory of Wagon Pars and held meeting with its Board of Directors. He extended an invitation to the Iranian Minister for Roads and Transportation to visit Pakistan.
Ambassador of Pakistan Shafqat Saeed and senior officials from Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Roads and Transportation were also present during the meeting.
