District Public Safety and Police Complaint Commission (DPSPCC) is being revived after a long interval in the Punjab province and government is set to notify long awaited structure and rules of the commission. The commission is compulsory under the Local Government Ordinance and Police Order 2000, it is learnt here on Tuesday.
Initially, chairpersons of the commission in 22 districts would be notified in a couple of days. The officials said that the functions of the commission, as described in the Police Order 2000, have also been finally approved and sent for the formal signature of the competent authority, which is chief minister.
According to the Federal Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights, the functions of the commission were re-defined through amendments in the Police Order, 2002.
According to the amendments, the provincial government would set up a district public safety and police complaints commission in every district, consisting of eight members and one chairperson. The commission will have its independent budget, drawing and disbursing officer and the commission chief will be its principal account officer.
The commission will have the powers to listen to complaints against the subordinate police officers in a district and approve an annual local policing plan, prepared by the head of district police in co-ordination with the district nazim.
