YouTube has released a statement in response to accusations that it is discriminating against its LGBTQ users by hiding certain videos in its Restricted Mode.
In the statement, which was put out via the YouTube Creators Twitter account, YouTube said that LGBTQ+ videos are available in Restricted Mode, but videos that discuss more sensitive issues may not be.
YouTube spokesperson whilst speaking to The Guardian, clarified what these sensitive issues may be, for example, videos that cover subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear.
YouTube has responded to accusations of discrimination after several high-profile members of its LGBT community reported their videos being hidden by the platform.
They discovered that their videos referencing to same-sex relationships or attractions had been filtered out by YouTube under its restricted mode and led criticism against the company using the #YouTubeIsOverParty on Twitter.
We are so proud to represent LGBTQ+ voices on our platform, YouTubes statement read. Theyre a key part of what YouTube is all about.
The intention of Restricted Mode is to filter out mature content for the tiny subset of users who want a more limited experience. LGBTQ+ videos are available in Restricted Mode, but videos that discuss more sensitive issues may not be. We regret any confusion this has caused and are looking into your concerns added the statement.
