Two snooker players from Iraq are set to take part in the Asian championships starting here from June 11, with organisers hailing their entry as a boost for the war-torn country. Ahmad Al Abdali and Ali Al Ali will represent Iraq in the event featuring 35 players from 16 countries.
"We are happy that Iraqi players have confirmed their participation and as a brother Muslim country we welcome their players," said Ali Asgher Valika, president of the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association. "We feel it's a good omen for international sport and for sport in Iraq."
The two players have confirmed their participation in the seven-day competition through their snooker association which has been active in promoting the sport in their country, said Valika. Iraq did not take part in last year's Asian championship held in Colombo, Sri Lanka due to a lack of funds.
