China's participation in French Open singles came to a disappointing end on Friday when national number open Li Na was knocked out in the third round. The 16th seed lost 6-4, 6-3 to Austrian 20th seed Sybille Bammer ending any hopes she had of going on to emulate her breakthrough performance in 2006 when she became the first Chinese woman to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final after battling through to the last eight at Wimbledon.
It was an untidy performance by the 25-year-old girl from Wuhan who earlier this year became the first Chinese tennis player to earn over a million dollars. Her 75-minute defeat was wrapped up when she hit a wild forehand, one of 26 unforced errors compared to the Austrian left-hander's 13.
