The Oakland Athletics blanked the New York Yankees 7-0 on Saturday to hand the struggling Yankees their eighth loss in 10 games. Chad Gaudin (7-3) had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning before giving up a single to Johnny Damon. It was the only hit he and Rich Harden allowed.
Harden, returning after a stint on the disabled list, worked two hitless frames of relief to give Oakland only its second win in its last nine games. Gaudin has been mentioned as a possible for the upcoming All-Star game on July 10 but said he was not giving it too much thought.
"The same way I look at the no-hitter; if it comes it comes," Gaudin told reporters. "But it's always about the team winning games."
Yankees catcher Jorge Posada was upset with his team mates after the loss and dismissed suggestions their struggles was all about bad luck. "I just think luck comes when you go after it," he said. "It seems like, at times, we just go through the motions. Today is one of those games."
Jason Kendall was 3-for-3 with a homer and Shannon Stewart and Dan Johnson also homered off loser Kei Igawa.
-- The visiting Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 with Michael Cuddyer and Lew Ford both contributing a homer and three RBIs. The Tigers have lost four of their last five.
-- The Texas Rangers scored a 5-4 road decision over the Boston Red Sox as Sammy Sosa hit the 602nd homer of his career to snap a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning.
-- The visiting Cleveland Indians beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-6, C.C. Sabathia improving to 12-2.
