Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday said the government firmly believed in the freedom of the press and was making all efforts to facilitate the expansion and development of the media in Pakistan. He was talking to a three-member delegation of the Colorado University of USA.
The delegation included Dr Paul Stuart, Dean of the School for Journalists and Mass Communication and David M. Dynak, Dean of the College of Media and Arts. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan was going through a period of transition and the expansion and development of the media, particularly the electronic media was due to the present government's deliberate policy to liberalise it.
It was however felt that mediaperson need specialised training and education to cope with the development in the wake of globalisation and changing circumstances around the world, he added. The Prime Minister welcomed the delegation to Pakistan and appreciated their interest to facilitate the establishment of Media University in Islamabad and upgrading the existing facilities in media related academies and institutions in the federal capital.
He said that the journalists working in various media organisations were very enthusiastic about the upcoming Media University and were keen to learn more about developments in their respective areas through specialised training courses.
The members of the delegation appreciated the initiative taken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in establishing the Media University which would not only be able to produce professional journalists but also help improve the performance of those already working in different media organisations. The meeting was attended by Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Muhammad Ali Durrani, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azim, Secretary Information Syed Anwar Mehmood, and senior officials.
