National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) Chairman Danial Aziz has said the devolution of maximum powers at grassroots is the only solution to eliminate corruption, adding that citizen community boards are an important part of the district government system solving urban problems through government and public participation.
He said this in a seminar titled "Collaboration of urban organisations and business community for promotion of education." Idara Farogh-e-Fayyazi Pakistan organised the seminar at a hotel here on Thursday.
He said, "People must keep an eye on the performance and understanding about institutions, and democracy plays a key role in the development and prosperity of nations."
He said, "As an independent nation we have got very little time to understand and harmonise ourselves with democracy and other urban institutions. But with the passage of time political awareness and promotion of education will help us get maximum benefits from this system."
He said his government had established up to 37,000 citizen community boards throughout the country with 1,000 more already working in Lahore. "These boards are working on 300 projects relating to urban problems. It is a fact that government departments and bureaucracy resist the system of the private-public partnership. However, there is no other solution to urban problems. Urban organisations will have to face such resistance.
