Several areas of the city fell into darkness on Wednesday due to cable faults and disconnected supply from Karachi Atomic and Nuclear Power Plant (Kanupp), sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday.
Soon after rain began, the city faced the electricity load shedding due to improper functioning of the Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation (KESC) power stations, making the whole rainy season miserable for citizens.
Two units of Korangi Thermal power plant were not working for some technical faults in the wake of heavy rain. The KESC administration failed to sort out these faults for ensuring smooth power supply to its consumers.
The KESC faced shortfall of 80 MW power supply bringing about continuous load shedding across the metropolis due to faulty plants, which could not be removed till late at night.
Sources in Kanupp said that power was suspended at 7:45 am on Wednesday due to fault which occurred in grid station. "Power supply would be restore after 36 hours", they added.
On the other hand, about 26 feeders had tripped and 80 cables damaged in rain in different parts of the city, which cut off power to a large number of areas. Due to cable faults Defence area was mainly affected as this area was completely out of power from last 18 hours. Residents of several other areas of the city including Hassan Square, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Agrataj, Gulshan Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Lyari, Nazimabad, Saddar, I I Chundrigar Road, North Karachi, Nazimabad, F B Area etc suffered prolonged power breakdowns.
Spokesman of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) Sultan Hassan said that Defence area was affected due to 8 cable faults which were damaged by DHA. Industries located in Karachi suffered approximately millions of rupee financial losses as a result of persistent power failure during rain.
