President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday hailed Supreme Court's decision dismissing petitions to bar the President from contesting the October 6 poll, for holding dual offices.
"The President respects and honours the judgement of the Supreme Court - as always," the Spokesman for the President Major General (Retd) Rashid Qureshi told APP and added, "the justice triumphs".
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz called the President on telephone, immediately after the decision, and said it is success of all those who believe in supremacy of Constitution and want Pakistan to move ahead on a democratic course. "Today Pakistan has crossed an important, indeed critical milestone in its march towards true democracy," Shaukat Aziz said in a statement.
The court on Friday dismissed petitions by the opposition stating that President Musharraf was ineligible to stand in the October 6 Presidential polls as he holds the offices of the president and the army chief.
Rana Bhagwandas who headed the nine-member Supreme Court Bench announced that "the petitions hereby are dismissed as not maintainable by a 6:3 majority." The Prime Minister said the Judgement would put to rest any ambiguity and questions that were being raised regarding the eligibility and qualification of President Musharraf for contesting the election from the current Assemblies.
