Advisor to Sindh Chief Minster on Information and Archives Hamid Hussain Abidi declared here on Sunday that there was need to strengthen the concept and working of the family as an integrated unit leading upwards to national unity and cohesion.
This was in keeping with the true spirit of Islam and needs to be strengthened in the face of the challenges posed by different alien concepts which did not provide that unique place of honour to the elders, the senior citizens, as an Islamic society does. He was speaking as chief guest at an 'Evening dedicated to Senior Citizen' hosted by the Lions Club International in cooperation with the Arts Council of Pakistan. District Governor of the Lions Club International Huma Bukhari presided over the function attended by a number of Lions Club members and senior citizens.
Hamid Hussain Abidi pointed out that the first lessons in etiquette in Islamic society given from the time of our Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was respect for the elders and honouring them. It was these Islamic family values where the family constituted the basic unit, that the edifice of the nation was built wherein the highest veneration and honour was extended to the elders. However, due to various alien influences this attitude of honour reverence for the elders had weakened and needed to be strengthened.
