Former chief minister NWFP and veteran politician, Arbab Mohammad Jehangir Khan Khalil died here of cardiac arrest in Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) on Tuesday. He was born on August 1, 1936 and remained a popular political figure of the province throughout his life.
Since 1977 he won all elections either they were for National Assembly or provincial assembly. In the party less elections of 1985, he was elected member of the NWFP Assembly and then chief minister of the province till the dissolution of the assemblies by the late General Zia-ul-Haq. After the winning of provincial assembly seat in 1988 he was chosen leader of the joint opposition against the then chief minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao.
He contested elections on ANP and PPP tickets and elected Member of the National Assembly in the elections of 1990 and 1993 respectively. He had also served the country as federal minister for petroleum and natural resources, education, housing and works and narcotics.
Although he was famous for changing loyalties after the dismissal of each government, but still he did not loss any poll he had contested, which he was attributing to his service of the electorates.
He has left behind two sons and three daughters to mourn his death. One of his sons Dr Arbab Mohammad Alamgir Khan Khalil is the provincial secretary information of PPP NWFP while his second son; Arbab Ammad Khan Khalil is deputy collector sales tax in Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Later, he was laid to rest in his ancestral grave.
