South Africans were on cloud nine on Sunday after their "glory boys" won the rugby World Cup for the second time. "It's hell coming to work after so little sleep and so much drinking, but it was heaven celebrating last night," said Tumelo a 25-year-old shop assistant in Johannesburg.
"Glory Boys!" screamed the leading Sunday Times newspaper, above a picture of the team celebrating in Paris. The paper also got back at Britain's tabloid press which had called fullback Percy Montgomery a peacock over his blond hair.
"Percy, you beauty!" crowed the Sunday Times. "Percy Montgomery destroyed England last night with a flawless kicking display."
The Sunday Independent hailed the Springboks as the "new Rainbow Warriors", a play on the "Rainbow Nation" term that former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu coined for the country after the end of apartheid.
But the celebrations were tinged with lingering sorrow over the murder of South African reggae musician Lucky Dube on Thursday in an apparent botched car jacking in Johannesburg,
The often-salacious Sunday World proclaimed "Might Boks take over the world!" but largely relegated the rugby story to its back page. It led instead with a story suggesting Dube's murder was a hit involving close associates of the musician. One person died in the late night revelry that broke out across the country after the Springboks sealed their victory.
