The non-professional management of Pakistan Stone Development Company (Pasdec), a much triumphant company established for the development of marble and granite and introduction of modern technology in the sector has failed in initiating any projects during last one year.
According to sources the management of the company had miserably failed to initiate any of the 36 projects regarding, square blocking of marble, granite, blasting during the first year of the company formed for a period of only three years.
The astonishing factor of the matter is that although the company was looking for an expert for introducing new technology for exploration of marble and granite for the post of the project director. But, interestingly the person recruited on the lucrative post having no such qualification.
The 36 projects identified for the company were the promotion of advance technology and programming, but none of the senior officials of the company have any experience in these fields.
The company has been established with great fun-fare for the promotion of the marble and granite sector with a huge amount of Rs 1.98 billion with another amount of Rs 205 million only for secretariat expenses. The management of the company during last one year had went 6 foreign visits to various countries spending a huge amount of the national exchequer on the useless and untimely marketing in the world.
"Each of the foreign visit made by the officials of the company was of not less than 10-days," a former senior official told on condition of anonymity. He said that the officials on foreign visits have nothing to present before foreign buyers.
The sources informed that Planning Commission had released an amount of Rs 1.98 billion with the conditionalities of the restructuring of the Board of Directors, inclusion of the representatives of private sector having CIB certification. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was also to be a professional from private sector while chairman of the company would either a federal secretary industries or finance.
None of these directives, the sources said although issued in April 2007 has been fulfilled, as majorities of the directors are bank defaulters. Further, the post of both chairman and CEO are occupied by a person, which is even professionally not qualified for the post. The non-professional approach of the management of the company, the sources said has forced a number of senior officials to quit the company.
The whole country in general and NWFP and Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata) particularly has vast reserves of marble and granite. However, due to the lack of the usage of modern technology more than 70 percent of them go into wastage at the time of production.
The objective behind the establishment of the Pasdec was to educate the people involved in the business for the usage of modern technologies. Presently, the mine owners mostly use blasting for the production of marble and granite.
