Naib Nazim Karachi Nasreen Jalil said on Sunday that environment pollution is one of the major issues confronting the world. Diesel vehicles are also responsible for environmental pollution, she added.
This she said while addressing the 4th International Conference and Exhibition organised by the National Forum for Environment and Health at Expo Center, Karachi as the chief guest at the ceremony.
Naib Nazim advised CNG Station Owners Association of Pakistan (CSOAP) to send their written suggestions to the city government against illegal workshops so as to check them according to law. She said that untrained and non-expert mechanics were installing CNG kits into vehicles at such workshops, increasing environmental pollution.
Chairman CSOAP Malik Khuda Bux, General Secretary of Association Abbas Sajid and President National Forum for Environment and Health Naeem Qureshi also spoke on the occasion.
Around 26 stalls about CNG system were set up at this exhibition in which local and foreigner companies set up their stalls. It was suggested in conference that stern legal action should be taken against untrained mechanics and illegal workshops. Conference was told that around 12,000 to 15,000 vehicles were being converted to CNG from petrol and diesel every month. Conference was also apprised that Pakistan has second position in the world for using the CNG.
On this occasion, Nasreen Jalil said that the city government had planned to establish five CNG stations in the city. She said that in first phase these stations would be set up at towns of city including Orangi, Gulistan-e-Johar, Malir, Shah Latif and Surjani Towns. She said that work for CNG route network was being carried out.
She said that two-stroke rickshaws would be banned by 2010. She also lauded CNG Rickshaw Scheme under President's Employment Scheme. She said that assembling CNG buses in the country was also a good news for clean environment.
