UN General Assembly's committee unanimously adopted a Pakistan sponsored resolution reaffirming right of peoples to self-determination, and called for cessation of foreign military intervention, occupation and repression.
Pakistan is tabling this draft in social committee since 1981 and each year General Assembly passed it by consensus. It serves to focus attention on struggle by people for their inalienable right to self determination and come up for adoption in General Assembly next month.
The resolution reaffirms universal rights of people to self-determination as enshrined in UN Charter and international covenants on human rights. It welcomes progressive exercise of this right by peoples under colonial, foreign or alien occupation and their emergence into sovereign statehood and independence.
It calls on those states responsible to cease immediately their military intervention in and occupation of foreign countries, territories and all acts of repression, discrimination, exploitation, maltreatment, in particular brutal and inhuman methods reportedly employed for execution of those acts against peoples concerned.
It requests Geneva-based Human Rights Council to continue to give special attention to violation of human rights, especially right to self-determination, resulting from foreign military intervention, aggression or occupation.
Besides Pakistan, a large number of Asian, African states co-sponsored resolution this year, including Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, China, Comoros, Congo, Chad, DPRK, Egypt, Eritrea, Guinea, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Liberia, Malaysia, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Saint Lucia, South Africa, Singapore, Somalia, Thailand, Tunisia & UAE.
