More than 3,000 Maoists rallied in Nepal's capital on Sunday to have the monarchy abolished in a protest a day before the winter session of parliament opens to debate the issue, witnesses said.
"Declare Nepal a republic," and other slogans were shouted before the protesters gathered in the centre of the capital for a rally led by party leaders, an AFP reporter at the scene said.
The rally is the latest attempt by the former rebels, who ended a decade of civil war a year ago in a landmark peace deal with political parties, to abolish the monarchy and make changes to the voting system to pave the way for the country to hold its first polls in nearly eight years. A special parliament session that ended earlier this month also failed to resolve the deadlock.
