The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has started replacing the worn out water supply pipelines in Rawalpindi city under Rs 5.142 billion Rawalpindi Environment Improvement Project (REIP).
The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) had got an assistance of Rs 5.142 billion from Asian Development Bank for REIP and replacement of water supply line was one of the major components of this project. The agreement was signed between RDA and Asian Development Bank last year.
Sources in RDA told this scribe that under this mega project, the existing sewerage and water supply lines in Rawalpindi would be replaced to avoid seepage and contamination of the water used for drinking. Wasa sunk 29 new tube-wells under this project to meet water shortage while 32 old ones were being repaired, sources added.
The RDA has also constructed a water treatment plant at Adiala Road. The sources said that in the first phase the work would be started in 16 union councils of the city and PMU has completed all the paperwork. Meanwhile, the Wasa officials rejected the impression of water shortage in Rawalpindi due to dry spell. Wasa has planned improvement in water supply system and network, which would streamline the supply, they said.
He said that water requirement of the city is 40 million gallons daily, whereas Wasa is getting 7 MGDs from Khanpur Dam, 15 MGDs from Rawal Dam and 22 MGDs from 237 tube-wells sunk in different areas of the city. Almost all the tube-wells are operative at full capacity.
