The Punjab government has launched a pilot project of computerisation of prisoners' record and District Jail, Lahore. This project would help in keeping an up-to-date data of all prisoners and their crimes.
This was stated by the Jail authorities in a briefing to the Punjab Human Rights Minister, Maqbul Elahi Malik, during his visit to District Jail, Lahore here on Tuesday. The minister asked the jail high-ups to provide all possible facilities and educate the prisoners so that they could become useful citizens. "It's high time that jails be converted as rehabilitation centres where prisoners be taught how to live as peaceful citizens."
The minister observed that arrangements be made so that hapless petty offenders could have an equal access to the legal means of justice. This would also help in their prompt redemption from jails, he hoped.
The minister appreciated the free provision of educational facilities to the juveniles by an NGO "Rehai". He, during his day out, inspected various barracks including juveniles, hospital and kitchen of the jail and expressed his satisfaction over the general conditions of cleanliness.
