Former Law Minister Senator Dr Khalid Ranjha on Tuesday said the Election Commission had to take decisions in accordance with the laws and those who had any problem with its decisions, should approach appropriate forum.
Talking to PTV, the prominent lawyers said that laws of the land were equally implemented to all citizens including former prime ministers. He said the EC had rejected the nomination papers of Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif on the basis of charges levelled against them, adding they should contest those charges at an appropriate forum to get any relief.
Khalid Ranjha said the elections were being held under the Act that was introduced during the regime of late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (with certain amendments) and if the politicians wanted to change this law, they should do it in the parliament.
He said holding of election was imperative at this crucial stage for the country, adding that individuals should not resort to boycotting the election on minor grounds.
To a question, he said the caretaker government had been sworn in only for 45 days to facilitate the EC and it was not a permanent body. The politicians, rather than criticising the formation of caretaker government, should monitor its role and steps. To another question, he said the National Reconciliation Ordinance had been stayed by the Supreme Court, adding even in practice it did not cover the charges levelled against Sharif Brothers for rejection of their papers.
He said there were only few days for lifting the emergency and it was mandatory on the politicians to help move the process forward for the interest of the nation.
