When persons representing other countries and governments ask questions about our domestic politics some of us go into the inferiority complex mode almost instantly. Then they either start to sulk believing that we have been insulted or they begin to fume and fret in order to protest what they believe to be "Disrespect to our sovereignty."
In particular politicians use such situations to rabble-rouse against their opponents. But the greatly changed situation and practices in international economic conditions and relations have brought down lots of past barriers and inhabitation in dealings between countries and their nationals.
There are going to be more changes like this in future when capital, labour and goods will shift from one country to another and then yet to another. For example many products made in Pakistan are imported from two or three countries with money belonging to Pakistanis and also to foreigners are finding their way to USA/EU.
Interdependability in the social sector is increasing, not only because of expatriate workers, there are other people involved. There are thousands of Pakistani students studying abroad. As the State universities are handed over to political mafias and teaching standards are low, the greater will be the desire of parents to send their wards abroad, where academic sessions are completed and teaching standards are high, thus even temporary migration and intellectual linkages good or bad, in the case of Pakistan are becoming a matter of mutual concern in its relations with other countries.
In these ways when a person in one country develops interest in another country, stakes in which are involved like the safety of life and limbs, of money and goods and of social stability, why should not foreign countries or their representatives/envoys find out what is actually happening due to their stakes. Call it pressure, arms twisting, lobbying or making enquiries the person who is paid to do these job, be it Rice for Negroponte, whether we like it or not, the order of the day is that we have to provide satisfactory answer for the good of the country.
We can watch out that in these dialogues we do not accept an insult and also we do not project ourselves as being arrogants and the most important thing that our politicians do in these dealings is not to be naïve, which is to say that while not accepting once again some kind of foreign mediation for solving the internal problems of the country or internal disputes, they should keep their eyes, ear and minds open for learning from the experiences and practices of other nations. You cannot escape responsibilities of tomorrow by evading today (Abraham Lincoln) God Bless Pakistan.
