The human rights committee of Sindh Bar Council (SBC) on Monday observed International Human Rights Day demanded early reinstatement of all deposed judges of superior courts. Their demand came during a seminar that they organised to mark the day in Karachi. The Chairman, SBC, Aqil Lodhi Advocate presided over the seminar.
The council members in their speeches highlighted the international human rights charter. Lodhi said that judges, who had been detained across the country after proclamation of emergency on November 3 should be freed and reinstated.
He said that curb on media should go immediately allowing some TV channels to telecast news freely. The participants through a resolution sought a promise from all the political parties that they would not give constitutional protection to the steps of present regime in the parliament and reject them instead.
The resolution was based on several demands that include restoration of the constitution in its real shape, dismissal of judges who took oath under PCO, withdrawal of forced amendment in Bar Council and Legal Practitioners Act 1973. Also included in the resolution was that all trading institutions of defence sector should be closed down and the lands obtained in name of cantonment and defence societies should be distributed amongst the poor class.
The resolution also called for an immediate end to unprecedented inflation, unemployment and corruption suggested 100 percent cut in existing prices of essential commodities. It was also mentioned that the education should be made cheaper and a single standard be set for all so as to abolish the class differences. Furthermore, the resolution said demanded immediate halt to water and electricity breakdowns so that development works could be completed at their earliest.
