The White Ribbon Campaign Pakistan (WRCP) is working on a novel idea of involving men to eradicate violence against women. The WRCP has selected young people for the reason not only because they are the future parents but also with a view that nowadays, Pakistani youth is more enthusiastic in making the society violence free for women.
The Country Director, WRCP, Omer Aftab expressed this at a White Ribbon discussion forum at the Institute of Cultural and Social Studies on Thursday. He said the WRCP is committed to strengthen the process of socio-economic development and empowerment of the disadvantaged section (women), at the grass roots level by building a violence free society for them. " Men's sensitisation is very important for the cause, as they are not only the perpetrators of violence in most cases but also are decision makers both at domestic and policy making level," he added. According to Aftab, they are targeting various stakeholders focusing their campaign on youth.
Youth in the country has a larger cohort besides being future leaders therefore, the WRCP, realising their worth and importance is arranging different activities. This discussion forum is a part of those activities and "we believe that social science students and sociologist can bring a positive change in the society," he added.
Nabiha Yahya, moderator of the discussion forum, appreciated the WRCP's efforts said such awareness campaigns are crucial particularly for young people as they maintain wider social circle that give them an opportunity to spread the message of social awareness to maximum number of people.
A large number of students and faculty members interacted in the forum showed great deal of interest to build a violence free society for womenfolk.
