The Election Commission (EC) on Friday said that political parties will be provided with CDs of new voters list in a week but it could not be altered as the election schedule has already been announced.
Talking to Business Recorder, Secretary Election Commission Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad said that no change in computerised electoral rolls could be made once the schedule is announced.
However, he said that political parties could obtain CDs of new roll from the EC in a week's time for their record, as it would yet take over half a month for the EC to display the list on its website. Political parties complained that the EC has not provided them accurate information about the electoral process in the upcoming elections.
They wanted that voters' list should be made available to parties through the returning officers. To a question about number of voters in the list, Dilshad said that over 80 million are registered voters and majority of them have identity cards.
He said all they need to show computerised identity card to cast the vote. Dilshad dismissed the political parties' allegation that EC's role was partial and it was not sincere in implementing the Code of Conduct. "Why political parties are not filing complaints with the EC," he said as they have received only a few complaints, which were swiftly disposed of.
While the political parties reported to have said that the ECP has taken no action against violations of Code of Conduct, as issues like inappropriate use of state resources, intimidation by local governments and agencies and the use of police to put up the banners of one political party, have not been addressed.
